The Elsie Whitlow Stokes Chess Club is set to renew for a second eight-week session starting on Monday, May 16th! The chess club will take place entirely online just like in the first session. Note that this session of chess club will be starting during the school year and continuing through the summer. Students who do not wish to do chess club during the summer can sign up for just four weeks (we would send you a custom invoice for half-price). To sign up for the four-week option please send us an email.

• Starting on May 16th, chess club will meet twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm. A professional chess instructor will give students a 30 minute interactive lecture, after which students will play practice games against each other— implementing what they have learned. The total running time for chess club is 1 hour.

• Chess teaches logical thinking, boosts attention span, and improves long-term planning. Studies have shown that learning chess facilitates achievement in mathematics and overall cognitive ability (Sala and Gobet, 2016).

• All instructors are patient, great with children, and have a solid understanding of the game of chess.

• The fee to participate in chess club is $320 per student for the entire eight-week period.

• Note: Anyone who would like to register for just the first four weeks for now can email us requesting a special invoice for half price.

• Participants will need to download Zoom and create a free account on lichess.org. Parents may want their children to enable “kid mode” on their Lichess accounts to prevent communication with other users. After you register you will receive an email with more information about Zoom and Lichess.
